Newborn Care Q & A

What is newborn care?

Newborn care focuses on your baby’s health care needs during early infancy to ensure that they’re developing on track.

After you leave the hospital with your baby, the Center for Advanced Pediatrics team can provide resources that help you care for your baby. They also provide routine health evaluations to monitor your baby’s growth, vital signs, and development.

Schedule a newborn care consultation with the team before you deliver your baby to lock in reliable pediatric care for the early days of your child’s life. The team can continue to monitor your child’s development from infancy into young adulthood.

What newborn care services are available?

The Center for Advanced Pediatrics team offers comprehensive guidance for newborn care, including:

  • Handling a newborn
  • Bathing
  • Swaddling
  • Changing diapers
  • Feeding and burping
  • Umbilical cord care
  • Breastfeeding support

The providers can also teach you how to take your baby’s temperature, clear fluids out of their nasal passages, and soothe them when they’re crying. They can also answer any questions about your baby’s health or their daily care needs.

Additionally, you can expect to schedule routine newborn health evaluations soon after discharge from the hospital.

What happens during my newborn’s health evaluations?

During your baby’s health evaluation, the Center for Advanced Pediatrics team completes a physical exam, taking your baby’s weight and measuring its length. The physicians also assess your baby’s behaviors and ensure that it reaches developmental milestones on time.

As part of your baby’s preventive health care plan, the team will administer the necessary vaccines that protect your baby from contagious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. These include mumps, measles, and polio.

If your baby has underlying health problems, the team can discuss your options for managing their care. They can also refer you to specialists if your baby needs additional care.

Urgent care services are available at the Norwalk office to treat colds and other illnesses that your baby can develop. The team offers on-site diagnostic testing and customized treatment to help your baby feel better fast.
